Italian Flag Origins

In this very room on the 7th of January 1797 the Italian Flag was born. The people of Reggio Emilia and French troops were able to repel the advancing ducal garrison of 600 men. So impressed was Napleon Bonarpte that he awarded Reggiani with 500 rifles and 4 guns. Napleon formed a new province and moved to the area where, for a period of time, he took up residence.

The flag's tri-colours were originally horizontal and featured a war trophy in the centre of the flag. The Flag was adopted in the Italian Constitution as '...the flag of the Replubic is the Italian tri-colour: green, white in three vertical bands having equal dimensions...'.

We felt just a little special be shown into the 3 storey Council room of such historical significance and importance to the Italian people.

Ciao from Adrian and the Team.
